The goal of the Take Action SC Environmental Education Partnership is to provide a program that informs, inspires and empowers students and teachers to protect and preserve the environment.

To achieve this goal the program offers lessons, support material, teacher workshops and classroom presentations to promote composting, recycling, waste reduction, litter prevention and sustainability.

The partnership is comprised of Coastal Carolina University, PalmettoPride, Keep South Carolina Beautiful and the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). These stakeholders are committed share knowledge, coordinate resources and work together to help others take action …

The centerpiece of the program is DHEC's "Action for a Cleaner Tomorrow: A South Carolina Environmental Curriculum Supplement" ("Action"). "Action" is a national award-winning kindergarten through 12th grade, activity-based, interdisciplinary curriculum supplement. "Action" was developed by a statewide team of teachers in conjunction with the S.C. Department of Education and is correlated to the state's science standards. DHEC offers statewide teacher training workshops and classroom presentations.

Coastal Carolina University (CCU) has one of the state’s best and most comprehensive sustainability programs. Sustain Coastal is committed to transform Coastal Carolina University into an environmentally sustainable university through campus operations, student curriculum, learning and outreach with students and working with the community. CCU’s sustainability initiatives include recycling, food waste composting, water refill stations, conservation and alternative transportation as well as programs and events. CCU enhances “Action” with its expertise and experience and will provide a foundation for schools to adopt sustainable practices.

Litter hurts communities, economic development and tourism. To make it worse, as much as 75 percent of all litter is material that could have been recycled. PalmettoPride, which is a public-private partnership of state agencies, community/civic leaders, corporate sponsors and concerned residents, is dedicated to prevent litter through education programs, law enforcement, volunteers and volunteer organizations. PalmettoPride’s litter lessons, grant funding and other support materials provide additional opportunities to teach students about preventing litter before it starts at their schools or in their communities.
